Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

Dr Shyalle Kahawita is a consultant eye surgeon and physician with subspecialisation in glaucoma. She studied at the University of Adelaide where she received the David Crompton Ophthalmology prize in medical school. She also completed a Master of Medicine (Ophthalmic Science) at the University of Sydney.

Dr Kahawita has completed her specialist ophthalmology training in various locations across Australia, including South Australia, Alice Springs, and Brisbane. She underwent further training and completed her Glaucoma Fellowship at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, which was supported by the RANZCO Topham Scholarship.

 Dr Kahawita currently holds a public appointment as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and
Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS). Additionally, she is involved in teaching and training medical students and ophthalmology registrars as a Lecturer at the University of Queensland. Previously her clinical teaching excellence has been recognized with the Professor Derek Frewin AO Citation from the University of Adelaide.

Dr Kahawita is committed to advancing the field of ophthalmology and has published extensively in several ophthalmology journals.
She is a volunteer surgeon in Papua New Guinea.

Her clinical interests include glaucoma (management, laser and surgery), minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), complex cataract surgery, manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS), pterygium surgery, and comprehensive adult ophthalmology, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and retinal vein occlusion
management, injections and laser.
