THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY
As well as staying up to the minute with the latest research, at KindSIGHT we have invested in the best possible technology to help us examine your eyes and provide the most appropriate treatments. It’s also important to us to be able to show you what’s going on with your eyes. The equipment we use is an important part of this process. The names of the various pieces of equipment may sound a bit daunting and “high tech”, but on this page you’ll find a simple explanation of what each one does and why we use it.
OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY (OCT)
This technology has revolutionised eye care over the last decade. It’s especially useful in the management of macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and glaucoma. This machine takes a special type of three dimensional ‘eye photo’. You could think of it like an ‘optical ultrasound’ except it analyses reflected light waves (from the near infrared spectrum) rather than sound waves.
The procedure only takes a few seconds in the clinic and it gives us microscopic detail of the retina, or ‘camera film’ in your eye. The resolution is much higher than a normal ultrasound or MRI scan. At KindSIGHT we’ve invested in cutting edge OCT technology – in fact it’s the same OCT that NASA has sent into space to analyse astronauts’ eyes while they are on a mission, far away from home.
VISUAL FIELD TEST
Eye diseases like glaucoma or other problems with the nervous system such as strokes or tumours, can result in patches of the vision in each eye going missing without you noticing. This eye test is designed to detect those missing patches and investigate how well the vision pathways from your eye to your brain are functioning. The test is performed on a special machine in a darkened room. It only takes a few minutes and we test each eye separately.
At KindSIGHT our visual field machine links to the OCT, which lets us perform a more comprehensive analysis. This clever machine also remembers how well you did on your last test, so it knows the starting points for your new test. If you need follow-up tests, you’ll appreciate the time saving this provides.
WIDE FIELD RETINAL PHOTOGRAPHY
This cutting-edge technology takes a high resolution photograph of the inside of the eye. This gives us a far greater field of view than we can obtain from a clinical examination. Importantly, for the first time, it allows us to examine and photograph the peripheral retina. The peripheral retina is the site of numerous eye diseases such as diabetes, vein occlusions, inflammatory retinal conditions, retinal tears and detachments, as well as freckles (naevi) or tumours.
At KindSIGHT we have invested in this advanced technology because we believe it lets us perform a comprehensive eye examination. It’s also useful to help show patients various eye problems.
This special piece of technology measures parts of the eye so we can calculate the strength or power of the lens implant (intraocular lens or IOL) in preparation for cataract surgery. Once again, it’s like having a photo taken.
We’ve chosen one of the leading devices, a ‘Lenstar’ device from Haag-Streit. This device is now using artificial intelligence and pattern recognition to assist surgeons with their IOL choice, which ultimately means better outcomes for patients undergoing surgery.
SLIT LAMP IMAGING
Many eye problems affect the structures located at the front of the eye, such as the eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea (transparent window) or lens. One of the best ways to help you understand your eye problem is for us to take a photograph which can be projected onto a computer monitor.
Slit lamps are binocular microscopes used by eye specialists when we examining someone’s eye. By investing in video imaging equipment on all our slit lamps, we can show you exactly what’s happening with your eye. We can even provide you with a copy of your photos to take home. For us, it’s all part of the process of keeping you informed about your treatment.
WAVEFRONT ABBEROMETRY and TOPOGRAPHY
This is yet another way KindSIGHT is staying up to date with new developments in eye care. This advanced technology provides sophisticated data about a person’s eye. It helps with diagnosis of certain diseases like keratoconus (a degenerative disease of the cornea). When we’re considering cataract surgery this type of examination can help determine whether you are suitable for particular types of intraocular lenses (IOLs).
